Staunton Chess

The particular type of chess set is the kind that is supposed to be used for competitions.
The Staunton chess set was designed by Nathaniel Cook, and is named after Howard Staunton.
Staunton signed and numbered the first 500 sets that were made. This particular style of chess set was made available first by Jaques of London in 1849. This style soon became the standard for chess sets, and has been used around the world since.
